Ukraine’s Olympic record
Ukraine ranks
33rd among
45 countries
in medals.
Ukraine has participated since 1994. The team has won 5 medals during 5 Winter Olympic Games.
For 24 athletes on the Ukrainian team, 2014 Winter Games will be the first Olympics.
Valentyna Shevchenko, Ukrainian cross-country skier will be carrying Ukraine’s flag during Winter Olympics opening ceremony.
Yulia Fominykh,
head coach of Ukraine’s freestyle ski team
“The best thing the coach can do now is to help the athletes overcome fear and to ensure they are in the right mood for the best result. Everyone on the team understands what they’re facing. I always tell them they don’t need to jump over their heads (even though that’s what they do), but instead focus on the best result they can achieve.”
Iakiv Godorozha,
the figure skater on Ukraine’s team
“I wish that more fans could come to Sochi to support us. And we’ll do our best. It really matter a lot for us to represent our country in Sochi.”
Sofia Vlasova,
short track speed skater
“I feel great responsibility and hope to show the best result. I always dreamed to become Olympic champion. I’ve been into speed skating, but Ukraine doesn’t develop a speed skating section now, so I ended up in short track.” Vlasova also says she has her own ritual before the start. “I sharpen my skates, I always do it myself and it makes me calm.”
