The conflict in eastern Ukraine caused more casualties among civilians in August 2016, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) said.

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights recorded 16 civilian fatalities and 75 injuries in Ukraine in August 2016, the UNOCHA said in the UN Humanitarian Bulletin.

In June and July 2016, 20 civilians were killed and 122 injured in the conflict, it said.

Shelling, particularly from those heavy artillery systems prohibited under the Minsk Agreements, was behind most (70%) civilian deaths in August. Thirteen casualties (5 fatalities and 8 injuries) were caused by firing from small arms and light weapons. Seven casualties (2 fatalities and 5 injuries) were caused by mines and explosive remnants of war, it said.

Since the beginning of the conflict, 9,569 were killed and 22,212 wounded. More than 2,000 of the fatalities were civilians, according to the UN data.
