A fight broke out on Aug. 19 over a banner on the façade of Ukraina, a large shopping mall on Kyiv’s Peremohy Square. The combatants included workers and 100 camouflage-clad guards hired by Kyivblahoustriy, Kyiv’s municipal authority in charge of city improvements. They scuffled with mall security guards. According to Glavred, an Internet publication, the municipal department wanted to dismantle the banner, but failed to produce any documents proving that they are entitled to do so. Municipal workers said mall officials had failed to pay the city administration to place the advertisement. Despite attempts by the mall’s guards to stop city officials, the banner – which said “Summer Lives Here” – was taken down. No injuries were reported.
