BAKU - The crash of an Antonov An-12 cargo aircraft, which was operated by the Azeri airline company Silk Way, was caused by a collision with an obstacle, said Arif Mamedov, head of Azerbaijan's State Civil Aviation Administration.

“The An-12 plane collided with an obstacle, that caused the crash,” Mamedov said at a briefing on May 19, according to the Azeri APA news agency.

Efforts are underway to ascertain what obstacle the plane collided with, he said.

The An-12 cargo aircraft, owned by Georgia’s Anham and operated by the Azerbaijan’s Silk Way, crashed on May 18, during a takeoff at the Dwyer airport in the Afghan Helmand province.

According to Azerbaijan’s State Civil Aviation Administration, the plane was carrying nine crew members. The crash killed seven, including five Afghan nationals. Two Ukrainians survived.
