You're reading: Biden to support Ukraine despite Russian reset

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden is due in Kiev for a three-day visit to pledge continued support for Ukraine's westward drive, despite Washington's efforts to improve relations with Russia.

Biden is to arrive in Kiev later Monday and will visit Georgia, another pro-Western, ex-Soviet republic, on Wednesday.

Biden is expected to reaffirm Washington’s support for Ukraine’s NATO membership over opposition from Russia. The visit comes after Russia and the United States pledged to work toward improving bilateral ties during a summit in Moscow.

Biden is to meet with president Viktor Yushchenko, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and the main opposition leaders as the country gears up for January presidential elections.
