In case you haven't noticed, Kyiv's central square, Maidan Nezalezhnosti, has a relatively new eye-catching addition.
A massive, 10.5-x-7.5-meter television screen was erected by Kyiv's Vision Media Group. The rectangular beast is notable for its crisp quality, enabled by a hi-resolution screen that transmits clearly even when exposed directly to the sun's rays.
The screen offers a steady flow of entertainment programming, focusing on sports, music videos and news. But its raison d' etre is to drum up ad revenues.
According to Oleg Didkovsky, Vision Media Group's manager, a one-minute ad spot costs $36, regardless of the time of day. The screen airs constantly from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week.
Kyiv Mayor Oleksandr Omelchenko cut the ribbon on the screen on Dec. 25. It ran without sound until last month when speakers were added.
