Serhiy Kyrychenko, the chief of staff of the Ukrainian armed forces, is undergoing a medical examination, after which he plans to resign, a source from the Ukrainian General Staff told Interfax on Tuesday.
“He decided to resign, although he has not yet tendered his
resignation. Kyrychenko is currently undergoing a medical examination,
which should show the state of his health,” he said.
Kyrychenko has been complaining about his health for a long time, he said.
Kyrychenko himself in fact confirmed to Kommersant-Ukraine that he
was planning to step down. “There is a time to take office and a time
to leave it. Nothing is eternal. Everything depends on current problems
and circumstances,” he said.
Kyrychenko confirmed that his decision to resign was prompted by his health status.
Interfax had reported earlier citing anonymous sources that
Kyrychenko had announced his decision to resign at a conference at the
Defense Ministry on Monday. The General Staff later called this
information premature and said Kyrychenko was undergoing a planned
medical examination.
