Yuriy and Maria Shukhevych, the son and the daughter of Roman Shukhevych, the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UIA), have lost their civil case against Party of Regions MP Dmytro Tabachnyk.
The Shevchenko District Court in Kyiv found that his [Tabachnyk’s] claims that "Shukhevych was Hitler’s officer who received the highest (Third) Reich awards from the Fuhrer" were true, Tabachnyk said on Wednesday.
The court rejected the plaintiffs’ demands to compel the MP to publicly apologize and to ban and recall his book titled "The Ukrainian Duck Soup," which contained these claims, he said.
The legal proceedings began in July 2008, Tabachnyk said.
In 1943-1950, Shukhevych was the UIA commander, and also held the rank of SS-Hauptsturmfuhrer in the Nazy Army. In October 2007, Ukrainian president Viktor Yuschenko issued a decree marking the 65th anniversary since the formation of the UIA and awarded Roman Shukhevych with the Hero of Ukraine title (posthumously).
