You're reading: Commission investigating seizure of Inter’s shares planning to end its work

A draft resolution to stop the activity of the Ukrainian parliament's ad hoc commission investigating the death of Ukrainian MP Ihor Pluzhnykov and the seizure of his shares in the Inter TV channel will be registered on Friday, August 28, the head of the commission, Bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko MP Andriy Portnov, has told Interfax-Ukraine.

“A parliament decision is required to stop the commission’s activity, and we’ll register a respective draft resolution tomorrow [on August 28],” he said.

Portnov said that this decision should be taken, as the publication of the commission’s reports on the Inter TV channel case amid the presidential election campaign could be described as “direct pressure on the freedom of speech.”

He also said that this decision “can protect journalists of the Inter television channel from attempts by various political parties to influence the editorial policy.”

Portnov said that the documents drafted by the commission should be transferred to law enforcement agencies.

As reported, a co-owner of Inter TV Channel, Ihor Pluzhnykov, died on June 22, 2005. Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko said in April 2009 that police didn’t rule out that the attested copy of a letter of attorney on the transfer of Inter’s property rights from Pluzhnykov with his signature and surname had been forged.

The Ukrainian parliament’s ad hoc commission investigating the death of Ukrainian MP Ihor Pluzhnykov and the seizure of his shares in the Inter TV channel by unknown individuals was set up on May 19, 2009. Portnov was elected the head of the commission, while Regions Party MP Anna Herman was elected his deputy. The remaining nine MPs are representing all factions in parliament.
