Communist Party of Ukraine leader Petro Symonenko has said that his faction will support a bill on appointing a presidential election date.

He told reporters on Saturday that his faction would support a proposal to consider next plenary week a draft resolution on setting the date of presidential elections.

“The communist faction will support proposals on setting an election date,” he said.

“Of course, I think that they [presidential elections] should be held this year, but depending on concrete circumstances, we’ll support those dates that will be proposed by other [factions],” Symonenko said.

He expressed confidence that this question would be discussed at a meeting of the parliament’s conciliatory council on Monday.

He said that the question of his party’s activity during the election campaign would be raised at a plenum of the party’s central committee slated for July 4.

Symonenko said that the decision on creating the party’s election headquarters would be taken at this meeting. He also said that Communist Party MP Ihor Alekseyev could head the election headquarters, as happened in previous years.

Moreover, Symonenko said he was ready to run for the presidency, if his party decides to nominate him for president.
