The Main Investigations Department of the Ukrainian prosecutor general's office is investigating a criminal case, opened against former prosecutor general Viktor Pshonka on counts of abuse of power and abuse of office.
“Investigators have established that the former prosecutor general
demonstrated deliberate inaction in the interests of ex-president Viktor
Yanukovych and, guided by his own interests, instructed prosecutors to
illegally counter peaceful protests in Kyiv between November 2013 and
February 2014, as a result of which damage was done to citizens’ rights,
liberties and interests, and to state and public interests, as well,
and the authority of the prosecutor’s office, other bodies of state
authority and law enforcement agencies was undermined, from all of which
ensued severe consequences,” the Prosecutor General’s Office said in a
statement on Monday evening, April 14.
A probe has been launched into “an inadequately organized
investigation” into offenses, committed by peaceful protesters in
central Kyiv, which helped offenders to escape punishment, the statement
says.
