A total of 180 vessels passed through the Danube-Black Sea ship canal in August this year, according to the press service of the Transport and Communications Ministry.
The average daily traffic of the canal over the month was about six vessels.
The Danube-Black Sea navigable canal goes through the Danube Delta
Biosphere Reserve. The Danube delta hosts over 1,500 species of flora
and 3,600 species of fauna, including Red List endangered species.
A number of organizations, including the National Academy of
Sciences of Ukraine, the World Wildlife Fund and the European
Commission, opposed the construction of the canal.
The official opening of the first part of the deep-water navigable Danube-Black Sea canal took place on August 26, 2004.
