Proposal yet to be discussed by other European energy groups.
Novo-Ogaryovo – Italian-based oil and gas company Eni has offered to join a proposed international consortium that would supply Ukraine with technical gas that the country claims it needs to resume the transit of Russian gas to Europe.
“We will do our best, and it must be done quickly,” Eni chief executive Paolo Scaroni said at a meeting with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Thursday.
The initiative to set up such a consortium is “a very constructive proposal,” Scaroni said.
“It is a new statement after the attempts to have transit resumed that have been made.”
In talking to reporters after the meeting, Scaroni said debating the proposal might involve many problems.
The proposal would be discussed with all European companies that receive gas from Ukraine, Scaroni said.
He hesitated to answer at what price the consortium would buy gas from Gazprom in order to be passed on to Ukraine. All the companies that would be consortium members are private enterprises and that for this reason price is a very important issue for them, Scaroni said.
