Brussels, November 26 (Interfax-Ukraine) - EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule has welcomed efforts by UDAR Party leader Vitali Klitschko to unite Ukrainian citizens around European values.

“The commissioner welcomes Klitschko’s involvement in the fight against corruption at the municipal level, as well as his efforts to unite Ukrainian citizens around key European values such as democracy and economic freedom,” according to a statement obtained by Interfax-Ukraine after Fule’s meeting with Klitschko, which was held in Brussels on Nov. 25.

The commissioner also noted that civil society and the opposition should play an important role in Ukraine in order to successfully follow the European course. Fule reiterated the EU’s commitment to deepening relations with Ukraine and completing the association agreement.

“While welcoming the adoption of the election law by the Ukrainian parliament, Commissioner Fule at the same time expressed the EU’s deep concern regarding the fact that the rule of law is not applied systematically in Ukraine. In particular, he stressed that the procedural flaws in the ongoing trials of opposition members were the symptoms of politically motivated justice and undermined the basic European values,” the statement reads.
