The dam of Kyiv Hydropower Plant is not dangerous to the population of the capital of Ukraine, Director of the Ukrainian Research and Development Institute of Water and Ecological Problems Anatoliy Yatsyk has said.
"The dam was designed to last for 100 years. It is 50 years old. The dam will outlive us and all Kyiv can sleep calmly. There is no problem, it will not collapse," he said during a press conference in Kyiv on Feb. 10.
"We have a more complicated problem with the embankment dam on the left bank, which is 41.2 kilometers long. Intensive development of the dam started in 2008 and could cause problems. I proposed that city stop the development," the scientist said.
Yatsyk also recalled that there is a great deal of radioactive silt in Kyiv reservoir, which could cause serious damage if it is drained.
