You're reading: Expert: Yushchenko’s farewell gift to Tymoshenko is to sign amendments to law on presidential election

Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko gave a farewell "gift" to presidential candidate and current Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko by signing amendments to the law on presidential election, Director of the Penta Center for Applied Political Studies Volodymyr Fesenko said at a press conference in Kyiv on Feb. 4.

"I think that at present it’s not that they [President Victor Yushchenko and presidential candidate Victor Yanukovych] agreed on something – for example, that Victor Yushchenko would receive the premier’s position. I don’t believe, [he would accept] any dividends for making this decision. I think that in this case, this was one of his farewell gifts to Yulia Tymoshenko," he said.

Board Chairman of the Laboratory for Legislative Initiatives Ihor Kohut, in turn, said that "the current president had to be involved in the game… But maybe not signing this law would have been more justified."

He noted that a number of procedures were violated during adoption of the law, which could lead to court proceedings in the future.
