The birth rate increased in Ukraine in the first half of 2009 compared with 2007 and 2008, and the number of adoptions has increased too, according to Tetiana Kondratiuk, the deputy minister for family, youth and sports, the ministry's press service reported on Wednesday.
According to Kondratiuk, over 472, 000 babies were born in Ukraine
in 2007, 510,500 babies in 2008, and over 297,000 in the first half of
2009. In addition, the number of marriages increased, while the number
of divorces decreased.
Kondratiuk said that 70% of families with children have only one child, 25% have two children and 5% have three and more.
“It is very important that the number of adoptions is increasing.
Parents who have their own children adopt orphaned children and form
children’s homes of a family type. This year Ukrainians adopted 1,528
children, and about 1,500 Ukrainian families are registering documents
for adoption,” Kondratiuk said.
