The FBI in Houston says it is investigating the death of a Ukrainian man who apparently died aboard a cargo ship on New Year's Eve.
FBI spokeswoman Shauna Dunlap says an autopsy is being conducted to determine if a crime was committed aboard The Alexia. The ship docked late Wednesday at the Port of Houston.
Dunlap says the victim’s identity is not yet being released.
The Ukrainian Embassy in Washington and the Consulate in Houston did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
Dunlap says if a homicide has been committed, the FBI will determine who has jurisdiction over the investigation based on where the ship was at the time of death.
Port of Houston Authority spokeswoman Lisa Ashley says the ship is unloading its cargo of steel.
