Anger over draconian new anti-protest legislation in Ukraine erupted into violence on Sunday as thousands of demonstrators clashed with riot police outside the government building in Kiev.
In the most violent scenes since largely peaceful pro-EU demonstrations began nearly two months ago, protesters seeking the removal of President Viktor Yanukovich set police buses on fire in clashes that lasted for more than 12 hours into the early hours of Monday morning.
Security forces fired tear gas, stun grenades and rubber bullets at stick-wielding protesters. Police unsuccessfully tried to disperse the protesters with water cannon.
