Gazprom is contesting in the Economic Court of Kyiv a fine totaling Hr 85.966 billion ($3.4 billion at the current exchange rate) levied by Ukraine's Antimonopoly Committee.

It is subpoenaing Naftogaz Ukrainy and Uktransgaz as third parties in the case.

The lawsuit was registered on April 12. The Antimonopoly Committee notified the parties on Feb. 12 of its decision, which can be appealed over the course of two months. In other words, Gazprom filed its appeal on the last possible day.

The Antimonopoly Committee levied the fine on Jan. 22, after determining that Gazprom had abused its monopoly position in transiting gas through Ukraine. However, Gazprom argues that the Antimonopoly Committee does not have the authority to regulate transit through Ukraine.

The official exchange rate on April 13 was Hr 25.55/$1.
