Kyiv’s historical landmark, the main building of Taras Shenchenko University on Volodymyrska Street, is getting a facelift before the start of the new academic year on Sept. 1. The classical building was erected in 1837—1843 by Vikentiy Beretti, a famous architect, who also taught at the university, which originally carried the name of St. Volodymyr. The colors red and black were those of the Order of St. Volodymyr, a high honor in Russian czarist times. The university was renamed after national bard Taras Shevchenko, a member of the university’s archaelogical commission in 1845-47. He was appointed as art professor in 1846, but never took the job because of his arrest in April 1847 for pro-nationalistic activities. More than 18,000 students study at the university.
