The Ukrainian Interior Ministry will soon submit a bill of amendments for consideration by parliament, which foresees that drivers will be held more responsible for drunk driving if this results in road traffic casualties, Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko has said.

“At the beginning of the Verkhovna Rada’s session, we’re planning to
submit a draft of amendments that tighten the responsibility of drivers
for drunk driving especially if this results in fatalities. In my
opinion, if a drunk driver kills a person while driving, he should be
given the maximum punishment, from 12 to 15 years [in jail]. We’ll put
forward such a proposal,” he said at a press conference in Khmelnytsky
on Friday.

Lutsenko also said that those who drive cars in a state of alcoholic
intoxication should be fined up to UAH 15,000 or be deprived of the
right to drive vehicles.
