The possible entry into NATO is a sovereign decision of Ukraine and Georgia, although Moscow is not happy with it, President Dmitry Medvedev told CNN.
MOSCOW, September 20 (Itar-Tass) — The possible entry into NATO is a sovereign decision of Ukraine and Georgia, although Moscow is not happy with it, President Dmitry Medvedev told CNN.
“As to Ukraine and Georgia, it is all very simple. My opinion was, and is, that such decisions must be based on sovereign decisions of the respective states,” he said.
“There was no referendum in Ukraine. There are certain results of the forecast concerning the people’s attitude towards this issue. Two-thirds of the country’s population do not back up the idea of Ukraine’s joining NATO, but several Ukrainian leaders with fabulous obstinacy proceed with pushing their state into NATO. If they intend to do it, it needs to be done by means of referendum, by means of appropriate procedures,” he said.
