Kyiv has asked Moscow to clarify clauses of amendments to Russian law proposed by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev that concern the use of Russian military formations in other countries, Ukraine's Presidential Secretariat has said.

“We expect an answer from the Russian side,” the secretariat’s deputy head, Petro Shatkovsky, said at a press conference in Kyiv on Thursday.

Commenting on the Russian president’s initiative, he said Kyiv hoped that “common sense will prevail” and that all contentious issues between the two countries would be resolved.

Asked whether Russia could deploy military formations in Ukraine, Shatkovsky said: “I don’t think so. You see that there is the position of the official Kremlin and there is the position of certain individuals and non-governmental organizations, including those opposed to Ukraine.”

Medvedev earlier submitted to the State Duma a bill that allows the Russian president to use Russia’s armed forces abroad (the document is to be considered at first reading on September 11).
