President Victor Yushchenko said Kyiv has not received any proposals from Washington concerning the deployment of elements of the anti-ballistic missile systems of the United States in Ukraine.
Yuschenko told this to the press in Chisinau (Moldova).
“Ukraine has not received any proposals,” the Ukrainian president said.
President Viktor Yuschenko also called for a serious reform of the Commonwealth of Independent States and minimization of the political components in the functioning of the CIS.
According to a statement posted on the Web site of the Ukrainian president, President Viktor Yuschenko commented on the matter to the press. He said Ukraine wants to find its place in the world and the European collective security system.
In this context, Viktor Yuschenko noted that Ukraine has two radar missile attack warning systems in Mukacheve and Sevastopol. The two radar missile attack warning systems had been working for Russia until 12 February 2008. The two radar missile attack warning systems are undergoing modernization at present for funds of the National Space Agency of Ukraine.
The head of the Ukrainian state said Ukraine strives to organize an effective use of these facilities.
“We want to rescue those high potential capacities we possess from the technical point of view, and to use them properly… We would like, naturally, to find a way of using these high capacities of ours, so as to work for the systems of security of all European countries and the entire world,” Yuschenko said.
The Ukrainian president voiced confidence that the implementation of a project on launching a Ukrainian-made communication satellite until 2012 will facilitate the effective use of these facilities.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, according to reports in some foreign media, the United States considers an idea of deploying radars in the south of Russia, in Azerbaijan, and in Ukraine as part of the creation of the system of anti-ballistic missile defense.
The United States had plans to deploy their anti-missile bases in Poland and the Czech Republic.
In August 2008, President Viktor Yuschenko cancelled the effect of the agreement of cooperation in the use of missile warning systems between Ukraine and Russia.
Ukraine considers modernization and further use of anti-missile radar systems.
On January 25, 2008, the Russian State Duma denounced agreement with Ukraine on anti-missile radar systems.
Ukraine has two radar missile attack warning systems in Mukacheve and Sevastopol.
Range of the radars is 1,900 kilometers.
