The development of a dialogue between NATO and Russia won't weaken Ukraine's prospects for joining the North Atlantic alliance, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has said.

“In the context of NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen’s
first major public speech on NATO-Russia cooperation, his comments on
Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic prospects are important to us most of all,”
ministry spokesman Vasyl Kyrylych told Interfax-Ukraine.

He said that Rasmussen had clearly pointed to the alliance’s desire
to continue its open door policy with respect to territorial integrity
and the right of each sovereign state to freely decide its security
policy.

“The alliance’s secretary general clearly said that a decision was
taken at the Bucharest summit that Ukraine would become an alliance
member,” Kyrylych said.
