The collapse of the Soviet Union and the current global economic crisis are linked, said Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

“Obviously the collapse of the Soviet Union and the global financial
and economic crisis are the links of the same chain,” he wrote in an
article published in the Rossiiskaya Gazeta newspaper on Tuesday.

These events attest to the collapse of the old socio-cultural system and the emergence of a new one, he said.

“This [new] system will for the first time in history reflect the
diversity of the world’s cultures and civilizations,” Lavrov said.
