You're reading: Lawmakers cancel name of Ukraina missile cruiser

A Verkhovna Rada resolution giving the name "Ukraina" to the missile cruiser that was built at the Sixty-One Communards Shipyard in Mykolaiv has lost effect.

A total of 247 lawmakers out of the 428 registered in the parliament’s session hall on July 6 voted for the cancellation of the name of the Ukraina missile cruiser.

As reported, on May 17, 2010 Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said that Russian would complete the Ukraina cruiser, which is 95% finished, but which Ukraine is unable to complete on its own.

The construction of the Ukraina started at the Sixty-One Communards shipyard in Mykolaiv, Ukraine, in 1984. The vessel, initially named the Admiral Flota Lobov, was to become the fourth in the Project 1164 Atlant series. It had its name changed to Ukraina in 1998.

The cruiser was to be put in service in Ukraine’s navy in 2000 or 2001 but later it was decided the country needed no ship of that class.

Today the maintenance of the Ukraina, which is about UAH 5 million per year, is funded by its manufacturer.
