Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn has said that politicians should not be involved in uniting Ukrainian churches.
“I am totally against politicians being involved in the question of uniting the church,” the parliament’s press service quoted the speaker as saying on Thursday.
He said that Ukrainian churches could be united only on a canonical basis and on the basis of consent from the churches themselves.
Lytvyn hailed efforts aimed at launching the negotiating process between the main confessions of the Ukrainian church.
He said that the church, at the current stage of Ukraine’s development, could become a major element of morality and unity in society.
“Unfortunately, the Ukrainian church has no person who would be equally authoritative for all politicians and citizens in Ukraine,” Lytvyn said.
He also said that “language, international problems and religions are subjects that should be off-limits in Ukraine during the elections.”
