You're reading: Lytvyn tells foreign diplomats about imperfection of Ukrainian law on presidential election

Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn at a meeting on Monday with ambassadors from EU countries, the United States, Canada, Russia, Belarus and Moldova criticized the new version of the law on presidential election adopted by the Ukrainian parliament.

The speaker noted that “this law by the two largest factions
rejected all proposals that should have given the law a civilized
form,” the parliament’s press service reported.

Speaking about possible amendments to the above-mentioned law,
Lytvyn said that amendments are possible, but if they were introduced,
they would not make the law more democratic.

According to the speaker, the crisis showed that the epoch of
socialism for Ukraine has ended and that’s why the building of the
state can take place only with civilized approaches.

“And elections should be an accelerator of this,” he said.

Lytvyn also said that the election campaign should be a competition of ideas for Ukraine’s development to a new quality.

The diplomats, in turn, expressed hope that the election campaign in
Ukraine would be held on a democratic basis and legal grounds, as only
on such a basis is the development of the state possible, in particular
Ukraine’s development along with the European Union.

Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Lytvyn again
highlighted the necessity of unity in state policy and the “adequacy of
actions” of representatives of the authorities, as currently the idea
of the common interests of Ukraine could only be described as an
“absurdity.”
