Ukrainian Prosecutor General Oleksandr Medvedko has announced that cooperation between law enforcement agencies has proved ineffective against corruption in the sphere of taxation.

He said this on Tuesday, during a coordination meeting of the heads of law enforcement agencies on crimes related to taxation.

Medvedko noted that in the last three years the tax police has reoriented to discovering serious and especially serious crimes connected with tax evasion and had found that their number had doubled over this period.

In addition, the prosecutor general stressed that a number of cases of the non-disclosure of serious crimes via the issuing of illegal refusals to open criminal cases have been discovered. According to him, over the year, prosecutors have cancelled 255 illegal refusals to open criminal cases, and as a result some 77 such cases have been submitted to the courts.

Medvedko said that the problem of large-scale criminal schemes, tax evasion, illegal VAT reimbursements and the activity of organized criminal groups in this sphere remain among the most crucial problems of the state.
