Kyiv, November 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) - According to the preliminary reports of an all-Ukrainian social poll on NATO, more than 80 percent of Ukrainians believe a referendum should be held on Ukraine's joining NATO, Dean of the Sociology Faculty of the Shevchenko's Kyiv National University Andriy Horbanchyk said at a press conference in Kyiv on Friday.
The poll was conducted on November 13-24 in all regions of Ukraine. A total of 2,000 respondents were questioned. The poll’s margin of error is around 2.4 percent.
According to the poll, if the referendum were held next weekend, than around 30% of those questioned would vote for Ukraine’s join NATO. At the same time, Horbanchyk said, that the dynamics of that index varies from 16 percentin the eastern region to 28 percentin centre and 68% in western regions.
Besides, around 32 percentof respondents believe, Ukraine should receive the NATO Membership Action Plan, around 28% of those polled said joining NATO would be a guarantee of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, around 57 percentof those questioned believe Ukraine should strive to join the European Union and around 30% of those polled thought Ukraine’s joining NATO would promote its joining the European Union as well.
At the same time, around 58% of those polled believe internal conditions are the main reasons of for the stalling of Ukraine’s movement towards joining NATO and the European Union.
The full results of the social study will be made public in Kyiv on December 16.
