Moscow hopes that the Ukrainian-Russian dialogue on weapons supplies to Georgia will be successful, Russian charge d'affaires in Ukraine Vsevolod Loskutov has said.
He said at a press conference on Thursday that the sides were holding a dialogue at all levels on the sale of arms to Georgia.
“We’re currently concerned over the process that we call the remilitarization of Georgia,” Loskutov said.
He said that a process of Georgia’s rearmament was underway and that this could trigger an escalation of a conflict in the Caucasus.
The diplomat said that to avoid this, the Russian president had taken a decision that helps impose restrictions and sanctions in military-technical cooperation with countries selling arms to Georgia.
“We [Ukraine and Russia] have different views and positions, but we’re seeking to find a solution and not to resort to sanctions,” he said.
He also said that the Russian side hoped that this dialogue would be successful, as Ukraine was interested in averting the escalation of the conflict.
“We want to reach agreement and persuade our Ukrainian partners not to sell weapons to Georgia. We hope that this dialogue will be successful,” Loskutov said.
