Tory backbencher Peter Goldring, known for his freelance diplomacy, embarked on a spur-of-the-moment fact-finding mission to Ukraine, where President Viktor Yanukovych has turned his back on promises to seek European Union integration and is instead pursuing closer relations with Russia. Within hours of arriving on Dec. 12 (and being met at the airport by a former intern), the Edmonton East MP sat down with anti-government organizers and addressed crowds of 400,000 people as they chanted “thank you, Canada!” Such acts are not out of the ordinary for Mr. Goldring, who last summer met with Turks and Caicos officials to discuss their annexation.
