Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine Oleksandr Savchenko has resigned as a protest against the external intrusion into the NBU's activities and ineffective policies conducted by the central bank's leadership.
“I have filed my resignation. It would be dishonorable to remain
silent and wait. The NBU is not independent, it is engaged in politics,
and sometimes it is being involved in certain schemes and
speculations,” he said at a press conference in Kyiv on Thursday.
According to him, there is an unprecedented intrusion into the NBU
activities by the president, his secretariat and other structures –
parties, groups, and various commissions investigating the central
bank’s activities. At the same time, he didn’t mention the government.
Savchenko accused the NBU leadership of speculation on forex market,
and conducting the refinancing of commercial banks in such a way that
certain banks receive larger shares, which they could direct to the
currency market.
He also criticized the NBU’s credit policies as discouraging crediting activities.
