The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine has permitted state specialized enterprise Chornobyl nuclear power plant (NPP) to unload spent nuclear fuel from power units Nos. 1 and 2 at Chornobyl NPP for its safe transportation and placement in the "wet" storage facility No. 1, the press service of the agency has said.

“The decision was made after the consideration of an application from Chornobyl NPP and a package of relevant documents. The agency took note of the positive results of checks on the applicant conducted in the period from April 6 to April 8, 2016,” reads a statement.

After the completion of this work, the agency will mull whether to reclassify the power units as nuclear installations and recognize them as facilities intended for the treatment of radioactive waste. Such a decision would, in turn, lead to the intensification of work on decommissioning the Chornobyl nuclear power plant.
