Scores of people have been taken ill in Kyiv with an intestinal infection contracted from tap water, according to the city administration's deputy head for health and social policy.

By Jan. 12, 64 people, including 55 children, were confirmed as cases of the infection, a statement by the administration cited Mykhailo Radutsky as saying. All of them were residents of the Bortnychi neighborhood.

“The medical institutions of Kyiv were ready to accept such a number of patients – altogether 49 people have been hospitalized since Jan. 6 – 40 children and nine adults. All the inpatients have been provided with necessary medicaments and treatment,” Radutsky said.

Ukraine’s sanitary service confirmed that water in Bortnychi’s mains was contaminated with an intestinal virus.

Artesian wells and water mains have been washed and chlorinated. The local population has been advised not to drink tap water or use it for cooking or dish or body washing before the preventive measures were finished.

Two kindergartens were closed provisionally.
