You're reading: Opposition protests in crisis-hit Ukraine

Opposition activists throughout Ukraine are holding protests to demand the president and prime minister step down amid a worsening financial crisis.

About 3,000 activists from the opposition Party of Regions waved blue flags on Kiev’s main square on Friday and chanted “crisis stop!” and “down with the authorities!”

Organizers said that protests were held in a dozen other cities in this ex-Soviet republic.

Although the rally in Kiev was relatively small, it reflected growing discontent with the government’s handling of the devastating financial crisis.

Analysts warn that dissatisfaction could grow into mass protests and civil unrest.
