OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) Deputy Chief Monitor Alexander Hug has recorded destruction of houses in Kominternove.

“Today, when I was patrolling together with reporters and representatives of the so-called DPR [the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic], the situation [in Kominternove] was calm enough. However, I and members of my patrol witnessed destruction that came into view as a result of yesterday’s shelling,” Hug told reporters on Jan. 15.

“We saw rooftops and walls damaged in the incident that, according to residents, took place yesterday,” he said.

When asked abut who controls Kominternove and other populated areas in the ‘grey zone’, Hug said that the very term ‘grey zones’ is improper.

“Grey zones don’t exist. As you might know from the UN resolution, all these locations are Ukrainian territory, in accordance with Resolution 2202 and who controls them is not important, but the question of security is,” he added.
