Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn has said he doesn't agree that central bank head Volodymyr Stelmakh is alone to blame for the destabilization of the hryvnia, as all branches of power are responsible for the situation with the national currency.
Lytvyn made a statement to that effect at a press conference on
Monday following a parliament conciliatory council meeting, commenting
at journalists’ request on Our Ukraine-Self-Defense faction leader
Mykola Martynenko’s statement accusing President Viktor Yuschenko of
destabilizing and weakening the national currency.
“I see it the following way – there are attempts today to find an enemy and focus all the criticism on him,” he said.
“I don’t share the position that the central bank’s head is such an
enemy,” he said. “The responsibility lies with all those who embody
power [in Ukraine].”
He said this was a problem of economic and political confrontation,
as well as the ineffectiveness of the powers that be and the imbalance
of the system of government in the country.
