The Public Prosecutor's Office (PGO) of Ukraine has asked a court to arrest former head of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) Ihor Sorkin and former board chairman of public joint-stock company Real Bank Volodymyr Ahafonov, the press service of the Public Prosecutor's Office has reported.

According to the report, the Public Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the illegal embezzlement of a stabilization credit of almost Hr 800 million by officials of the NBU and Real Bank.

“On September 7, 2015 the notice of suspicion was issued to former governor of NBU Sorkin that he committed crimes under Part 1 of Article 255 (the creation of a criminal organization), and Part 5 of Article 191 (embezzlement of funds on an especially large scale) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine,” the report said.

The press service also said that on September 7, a notice of suspicion was issued to Ahafonov who is suspected of committing crimes under Part 1 of Article 255 (the creation of a criminal organization), Part 5 of Article 191 (embezzlement of funds on an especially large scale), Part 3 of Article 209 (money laundering) and Part 2 of Article 366 (forgery by an official) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

“The persons are suspected of participating in the criminal group created by Serhiy Kurchenko in 2013-2014 to commit the gravest of crimes… in particular, embezzlement of property and assets of the NBU worth almost Hr 800 million,” the Public Prosecutor’s Office said.

Sorkin is suspected of embezzling funds of the Agrarian Fund worth over Hr 2 billion in collision with officials of Brokbusinessbank and the Agrarian Fund.
