Oleksii Pukach, the former head of the Interior Affairs Ministry's department of criminal intelligence who is accused of murdering journalist Georgy Gongadze, has confessed to involvement in the crime.

Vasyl Hrytsak, the deputy chairman of the Security Service of Ukraine, announced this at a news briefing.

“Pukash admitted his involvement in this crime,” he said.

Hrytsak did not specify whether Pukach is suspected of being the one who ordered this crime.

According to Vasyl Hrytsak, Pukach named people who ordered the murder of the journalist. Hrytsak refused to disclose the names. He only said some of the organizers of the crime are alive.

Hrytsak said Pukach has not crossed the Ukrainian border since he was put on the wanted list. He lived in different regions of Ukraine, including in Kharkiv region, Luhansk region, Zhytomyr region, and made trips to Donetsk region.

The health conditions of Pukach are within norm. At present, Pukach is in the building of the Prosecutor General’s Office. Interrogation of Pukach continues.

According to Hrytsak, Pukach has said he knows where the head of the killed journalist is.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, officers from the Prosecutor-General’s Office and the Security Service of Ukraine detained Oleksii Pukach in the Zhytomyr region on July 21.

President Viktor Yushchenko hopes the arrest of Pukach will step up the investigation in the murder of Gongadze.
