You're reading: Poroshenko, European leaders to discuss EU’s greater involvement in settlement of Donbas crisis

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and European Union leaders will discuss in Brussels the possibility of strengthening the EU's role in the settlement of the Donbas crisis.

“There are ideas of enhancing the EU’s involvement in a peaceful settlement [of the conflict in Donbas]. I’d be glad to talk with the EU leaders about this,” Poroshenko said at the beginning of the EU-Ukraine mini-summit in Brussels on Dec. 16.

As was reported, Poroshenko on December 16 went to Belgium on a two-day working visit. He is attending the EU-Ukraine mini-summit in Brussels. He is also scheduled to hold talks with President of the European Council Donald Tusk and President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker.

On Dec. 17, the president will visit the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe and examine the work of the NATO Special Operations Headquarters, where staff talks will be held under the presidency of the Ukrainian president and Supreme Allied Commander in Europe Philip M. Breedlove. Poroshenko is also scheduled to hold a meeting with Breedlove behind closed doors.

On Thursday afternoon, Poroshenko will meet with Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg. Following the meeting, they will have a joint press conference.
