You're reading: Poroshenko says Mukacheve incident contraband-related

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said that the incident in Mukacheve, Zakarpattia region, was about re-distribution of contraband flows and that the inquiry should lead to relevant staff reshuffles.

The events in Mukacheve exposed a number of long outstanding issues that require an immediate solution, Poroshenko said.

“We must untangle the knot of old problems requiring an immediate solution. I am talking about clans, smuggling, corruption and so on. The picture of what is happening there now is not black and white, it is simply shockingly black,” the president told the Military Cabinet of the National Security and Defense Council in Kyiv on Monday, his press office said.

This conflict was about re-distribution of contraband flows, he stressed, urging law enforcement agencies to take decisive action against smugglers.

“There has to be a tough and principled inquiry into everyone involved. Searches, arrests and direct criminal liability. No parliamentary mandates and no government connections will help,” said Poroshenko, ordering to conduct staff reshuffles upon completion of the inquiry.
