Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko during a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council has stressed the importance of financing the security and defense sector of Ukraine in 2017 at 5 percent of GDP.

“The key position, which we must ensure by this draft state budget, is that 5 percent of the GDP should go for the defense and security sector,” the presidential press service quoted Poroshenko as saying on Sept. 13 evening.

The president stressed that he will more closely monitor the implementation of another decision of the NSDC so that “3 percent out of these 5 percent should go exclusively into the defense.” “I want to emphasize that the total funding is Hr 129 billion,” Poroshenko said.

The head of state stressed that the process of building the new army, the new Armed Forces of Ukraine has been and remains his first priority.
