There will be no impediments to elections on Ukraine-controlled territories of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts in case the Minsk agreements are fulfilled, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said.

“The elections should be held provided that joint and coordinated work of Ukraine and the coalition which is backing Ukraine worldwide forces the Russian side amongst others to fulfill the Minsk agreements. If shelling incidents continue, security of people is my top priority,” Poroshenko said at a press briefing at a military range near Chuhuiv in Kharkiv oblsat on Aug. 22.

In the opinion of the president, the elections should be held on territories outside the zone of artillery fire.

“If they are outside the distance which artillery shells may fly, the maximum distance is 30 kilometers, if they are outside this range, I do not see any impediments to holding the elections. This is not about political motivation, the sole motivation is security,” the president said.
