Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has asked Prosecutor General Oleksandr Medvedko to thoroughly check reports of an attempt to illegally seize OJSC Tavria cognac plant in Nova Kakhovka (Kherson region), the president's press service reported on September 11, referring to a letter from Yushchenko to Medvedko.

The president said that recently the mass media had reported the
illegal seizure of property. This mainly concerns activities of various
groups and companies that illegally appropriate the property of others,
the president said.

The president mentioned the alleged attempt to illegally seize Tavria cognac plant’s property.

“Taking into account the special [importance] of the event, I ask
you to urgently check the given facts and [check] if there are enough
grounds to take a decision under the procedure foreseen in Article 97
of the criminal code, and inform me personally of the results by
September 15, 2009,” reads the letter.

As reported, a total of 169 people were arrested and 39 injured as a
result of an alleged attempt to seize the Tavria cognac plant in Nova
Kakhovka on September 3. The victims also included two police officers
who suffered gunshot wounds.

The prosecutor’s office opened a criminal case on the seizure of administrative buildings.

“This raider attack was well organized, and we’re currently
investigating who organized it,” Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko was
quoted as saying in the reports.
