If the Verkhovna Rada has no real majority and it is impossible to form a new coalition, the parliament should be disbanded, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has said.
Yushchenko said this while commenting on his meeting with Verkhovna
Rada Chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn on Wednesday, the presidential press
service reported.
“There is no majority at the Ukrainian parliament today. The
Ukrainian parliament cannot garner the 226 votes needed to pass any
law. This is a parliamentary crisis, which has appeared as a result of
disregarding the basics of Ukraine’s constitution,” Yushchenko said.
The head of state called on the parliamentary forces to decide
whether there was an actual parliament majority capable of passing
legislative decisions.
“If such majority does exist it should take responsibility. If there
is no such majority, the parliament should be seeking to reformat the
coalition. If this is impossible, the next step to overcome this crisis
should be self-dissolution of the parliament, as prescribed by the
constitution,” Yushchenko said.
