Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has proposed that Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and the leaders of political parties and blocs, including the opposition, state their positions on the country's constitutional system ahead of the presidential election.
“I’d like to propose that the prime minister express her view on
Ukraine’s [constitutional] system,” he said at a meeting with regional
governors in Kyiv on Thursday.
Yushchenko said that the opposition leader, as well as the leaders of
communists and other political parties, should also express their view
of Ukraine’s constitutional system.
“Then, we’ll guarantee that the constitutional process is a democratic process,” he said.
Yushchenko described holding a debate on the constitutional system in
Ukraine ahead of the presidential election as a “patriotic and national
position.”
The presidential election in Ukraine is scheduled to be held in January 2010.
