Protesters and the National Guard clashed near the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada after decentralization amendments to the Ukrainian constitution were passed at first reading.

The protesters started rocking the metal fence on the parliament perimeter, and the police responded. Bottles with water and other objects were hurled at the police, who used rubber clubs.

Casualties have occurred in the clash.

The police pushed the protesters several meters away from the parliament building. A short time later a tear gas grenade and smoke grenades were thrown in the epicenter of the clashes.

The police detained one of the most active protesters near the Verkhovna Rada building on Monday afternoon, a representative of the city police department told Interfax-Ukraine.

“One of the most active protesters who breached the public peace has been detained,” the police said.
